Red 2022 Maserati Levante driving on track

Located in Hurst, Momentum Maserati teeters near the edge of the Oklahoma-Texas border. Because there aren’t a whole lot of Maserati dealerships around, it’s not an uncommon occurrence to have Oklahomans flock to us, asking, “Can I buy a car out of state?” The answer is yes, you can buy a car out of state. Between registration, taxes, and fees, buying a car in another state may seem like a daunting process–even more stressful than the process of buying a car in your own state. But, it’s actually easier than you might think, and isn’t all that different from buying in state. Learn the ropes of buying a car out of state with Momentum Maserati, such as registering in another state, what to expect, and more, then browse our new vehicle inventory.

How to Register a Car Purchased Out of State

When buying a Maserati in Texas when you’re out of state, one of your main concerns is probably the registration process. How does one register a car purchased out of state? It really isn’t much different from the regular registration process, and it instead only requires a trip to the DMV and a bit of paperwork. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Request a bill of sale with the price you purchased your vehicle at from where you bought your car, then find your nearest DMV by using DMV Near Me.
  2. Before you stop by your DMV, you’ll want to make sure you have the following items:
    • Bill of sale
    • Completed application for vehicle transaction form
    • Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
    • Lienholders’ names and address
    • Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
    • Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
    • Registration Fees
    • Proof of insurance
    • Proof of residency
  3. Once you arrive at the DMV, inform the DMV clerk that you purchased your vehicle out of state and that you would like to title the vehicle and register it at your address.
  4. The clerk then will most likely give you back your bill of sale, but they will hold on to your Texas title. They’ll then ask you to pay the difference in sales tax between Texas and your state.
  5. Your new title should eventually arrive in your mailbox.

Taxes and Fees: Buying a Car in Another State

Unfortunately, one of the downsides to buying a car out of state is that you’ll have to pay a few extra hundred dollars. This is because of the fact that you’ll have to pay local sales tax, the difference between the sales tax in Texas and your state, as well as applicable processing fees from the DMV. But this isn’t a huge deal–you won’t be paying much more than registering your vehicle in-state.
