What is a Hybrid Car?

2021 Maserati Ghibli Hybrid

Hybrid-electric vehicles, also commonly referred to “hybrid cars”, or simply “hybrids”, are a common type of alternative-fuel vehicle that utilize both gasoline and electricity as power sources. There are many types of hybrids, including parallel, series, and plug-in hybrids, though the lattermost type is really in a class of its own (read on and we’ll explain why). Ready to learn more about the meaning, definition, and significance of the term “hybrid car”? At Momentum Maserati, we’re here to help.

Types of Hybrid Cars

The meaning of the term “hybrid car” is a vehicle that combines two or more energy sources to create power. Most hybrid-electric vehicles, or “hybrids” use gasoline and electricity.

There have been other types of hybrids (like fuel cell hybrids and diesel hybrids). For all intents and purposes though, the vast majority of hybrids are gasoline-electric powered hybrids. So when we refer to different types of hybrids below, we’ll be referring to different types of gasoline-electric hybrid cars.

Parallel Hybrid

Parallel hybrids are probably the most common type of hybrid sold in the U.S. The definition of a parallel hybrid is essentially a hybrid wherein the gas engine and electric motor are both connected to the same transmission, blending the power sources simultaneously to propel the vehicle.

Series Hybrid

The definition of a series hybrid car is a hybrid that connects only the electric motor(s) with the transmission, with the gas engine acting as a generator for the electric motors.

Plug-In Hybrid

Plug-in hybrids use a gas motor and electric motors like series and parallel hybrids, but they work very differently.

What makes plug-in hybrids so special is that they have larger battery packs closer to what true electric vehicles (EVs) have. That’s because, with plug-in-hybrids, you drive a certain amount of time using ONLY battery power like an EV. Then, once the battery runs out, the gas motor kicks in, and the vehicle works like a regular gasoline vehicle.

The advantage here is being able to access zero-emissions driving for up to 15, 20, or even 30+ miles (enough range for most Arlington and Fort Worth commuters to get to work, re-charge, and drive back home to Hurst on solely electric power). Range anxiety is also eliminated because you can still drive longer distances with the gasoline engine. What’s more, PHEVs take less time to charge than standard EVs.
