Maserati. Just the name alone conjures up images of sleek, sexy sports cars and achingly handsome SUVs. But was this always the case? Was Maserati always a sports car aficionado’s brand? Maserati History Timeline

  • 1914: Ettore and Ernesto Maserati open a car workshop in Bologna, Italy called “Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati”. Then WWI hits.
  • 1926: Alfieri, Ettore, and Ernesto begin what will become the first vehicle named Maserati, boasting the iconic Trident logo, the Maserati Tipo 26.
  • 1929: Racer Baconin Borzacchini sets a new Class C world record driving a 16-cylinder Maserati V4, a record that remains until 1937.
  • 1937: Italian entrepreneur Adolfo Orsi buys Maserati from the Maserati brothers.
  • 1939: Wilbur Shaw wins the Indianapolis 500 behind the wheel of the “Boyle Special” 8 CTF. Maserati HQ moves from Bologna to Modena, Italy.
  • 1947: The first Maserati designed for daily use (not racing), the Maserati A6 1500, is revealed, designed by Pininfarina.
  • 1957: The Maserati 3500 GT is revealed at the Geneva Motor show. Production increases rapidly to meet the demand for grand tourers.
  • 1963: The first iteration of the Maserati Quattroporte is revealed at the Turin Motor Show, introducing the luxury sports sedan.
  • 1966: The first Ghibli is presented at the Turin Motor Show.
  • 1971: The Maserati Bora is unveiled.
  • 1980s: The Maserati Biturbo is released. The President of Italy, Sandro Pertini, chooses the Quattroporte III as his Presidential limousine.
  • 1993: Maserati and Ferrari begin a partnership wherein Maserati vehicles receive Ferrari engines.
  • 1998: The Maserati Spyder is released.
  • 2003: The 5th generation Maserati Quattroporte is unveiled.
  • 2007: A new Pininfarina-designed Maserati GranTurismo is released.
  • 2013: The new Maserati Ghibli is unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show.
  • 2016/2017: The Maserati Levante is unveiled, heralding in the first-ever “Maserati of SUVs”
